Escalating Murders in New Orleans and Puerto Rico

While Puerto Rico's murder and general crime rate is through the roof, there are places even more violent, including here on the U.S. mainland. For example, the City of New Orleans in Louisiana.

In the pre-Katrina year of 2002, that city registered a murder rate of 53 murders per 100,000 citizens. Last year ('06), its murder rate rocketed to 81 murders per 100,000. (And that figure is based on the unconfirmed population estimate of 200,000. The U.S. Special Gulf Projection put the population at just 158,353.)

By contrast, Puerto Rico's murder rate last year was 14 murders per 100,000 and New York City's was 7 murders per 100,000.

And to make matters worst, in the first 8 days of 2007, 9 people have been murdered in New Orleans. Needless to say, New Orleanians are even angrier at the incompetence of Mayor Nagin, police and other officials to carry out the most basic function of government: public safety.

Yesterday, the people took to the streets in protest to express their outrage and to condemn the do nothing leaders.

Officials in both Puerto Rico and New Orleans attribute their respective murders rates escalating drug trafficking and related crimes. It's also probably not a coincidence that both are tourist destinations for the well-off; enforce a caste system on the masses; and are communities being deeply impacted by migration and the global economic shifts.

  1. 2007 in PR started very badly for the islanders. in 7 days there was, reported, 31 murders. it is a shame because the island has a decrease in this type of crime in the last 2 years. lets see what happens the rest of the year.

  2. Is it really 30 murders? Wow! I'd love a link to that data. But regardless of the number, what we know is that crime is rampant and the authorities seem incapable of containing it. Additionally, PR seems to have become unanchored and it's being buffeted by the winds of global change. As a result, the leaders seem immobilized and unable draw a path to a better place. The result: increasing emmigration, unemployment and crime. It's a terrible shame.
