New York City's Oldest Spanish Bookstore to Close

Librería Lectorum, New York City's oldest and largest Spanish-language bookstore, will close its W. 14th St. storefront on September 30, 2007.

They say it's due to gentrification. Too bad.

How many times did I walk by Librería when I lived in the neighborhood at 15th and 6th? No doubt it was hundreds of times as I walked to the A Train, or to Hudson and my job in the West Village, or to countless other destinations.

I never tired of checking out the latest titles in the store's window displays--even if my book purchases were in English and at Barnes & Nobles on Fifth Avenue.

While certainly not the same experience, the good news is that fans can still visit Librería Lectorum online.

Why does it have to close? Can't more advertisement be given to it, so people can go. I was there several times, and I loved it. I wanted to take my eight year old to pick up books, and now I won't be able to. How can you chose books on line when it's better to look and feel them right in your hand. It's hard to get good spanish books in order to further educate our young ones.

I walked down 14 th street trying to find the best spanish book store I knew in NY. Today I decided to seach for it at google and I just found out that it has closed it's doors. It's such a shame, because I loved going in there and it was refreshing from a cultural perspective and Barnes and Nobles is not doing it. I believe the store should consider opening for business again.
