Walla Walla Latinas do science, too!

Maria P. Gonzalez of the UNION-BULLETIN published an inspiring story about the Walla Walla High School team (Walla Walla, Washington) competing in this weekend's Bonneville Power Administration Science Bowl at the University of Portland.

She wrote that the team members "have more than an interest in math, science and astronomy in common. They are also all girls. And they are all Latinas." The girls are: Marina Marin, Stella Miranda, Kelsey Trejo, Irene Ureno, Claudia Vargas, Thalia Bocanegra, Jessica Lozano, Jennifer Lopez and Chantell Lopez.

High school teams compete at regionals like the Bonneville Power Administration Science Bowl for an opportunity to go to the National Science Bowl in Washington, DC, April 26-30, 2007. The competition is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Walla Walla's Latino population comprised 17.5% of the City's population in 2000.
