Zaida Maria Diaz, a native of the Dominican Republic was among 154 people sworn in as American citizens at a ceremony held at the New-York Historical Society in Manhattan.
The ceremony included a videotaped message from President Bush, who said, "You are now free to pursue your dreams and practice your faith."
Stressing the importance of taking the legal route to citizenship, Diaz, 39, says that her journey has been relatively easy. Her husband, who was already in the country, applied for her to join him. Diaz was accompanied by her daughter, Zaraida, 16, a junior at the prestigious Dalton prep school.
