The U.S. Mint unveiled the first U.S. coin with an inscription in Spanish, a quarter honoring Puerto Rico as the "Isla del Encanto" — or "Island of Enchantment."
This should set-off the English-only wingnuts on another round of Latino bashing. But hey, I'll gladly take as many of these lovely 'foreign' language coins as the cultural imperialists want to dump.

ReplyDeleteWhat I found interesting is that many do not know that the US doesn't have an "official" language.
This issue was the one thing that galled me during Obama's election campaign... "We will have them all learn English!!"
Sad that the US is one of the few countries in the world that is limited to one language- and is proud of it!
Who cares! I speak English and am proud of it. I have family that speak both Spanish and English. I am half Puerto Rican and am again proud of it. Just because I don't speak Spanish doesn't mean I am not proud of my culture.

ReplyDeleteI was born and raised in the USA of parents both being Puerto Rican. I can say it has been great for me to be able to speak both english and spanish. My son speaks fluent spanish as well. If you are true to yourself and your culture it does not matter whether you speak the language or not. What matters is what you feel in your heart and soul. Santino
